NO HOSPITALITY SHALL GO UNREWARDED
Jesus tells us today: "Whoever loves father or mother... son or daughter (and earthly possessions) more than me is not worthy of me" [Matt. 10:37]. "Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it" [Matt. 10:38]. This words of Jesus should not be taken literally. Jesus is condemning undue attachment to earthly possessions. Any family ties or addiction to passing things of this world should be severed if you are hoping for eternal life.
What then do we do with our possessions? The answer is contained in the 1st reading. The woman of Shunem, whenever Elisha passed, she invited him to dine with her. For the sake of the mission of Elisha and having observed him as holy man, the family decided to give him a room for rest in addition. The woman did not mind to hoard the goods God gave them. She invested them for the sake of His Mission. She understood that we are just caretakers of whatever we have.
Brothers and sisters, I want to bring to your consciousness that life is all about give and take. When you stop to give, you start to decay. In the case of God, he gives us fourfold when we give to him. Not only in this world but also in the world to come. "Whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones ... will surely not lose his reward" [Matt. 10:42]. The woman of Shunem received a son as reward for her hospitality towards Elisha. You still remember Abraham in yesterday's reading. His hospitality gained him Isaac.

How often do we lose huge blessings and open doors in this world for neglecting very tiny work of mercy? Let me summarise with these two stories. First, a man use to give school pupils water when they pass by his house. After many years, this man got sick. He was admitted into a hospital where one of the pupils he used to give water (now a doctor) was working. The doctor recognised the man. After the special treatment he gave him, he paid his bill and wrote on his folder "paid by a cup of water." Secondly, a soldier of Alexander the Great was driving a camel with heavy loads. Feeling pity for the animal, the soldier took a bag from the back of the camel to lighten its burden and carried it upon his shoulders. Luckily, Alexander saw him and was so pleased by the act. He called the soldier and said to him, ''The bag you have on your shoulders is filled with gold. Take it as a gift from me, you deserve it." So he got rich by an act of charity.

Brethren, let us learn to spend our lives and talents for others. Instead of trying to save them. Dead sea is so called because it receives from other rivers but has no outlet to flow out. And so no living thing succeeds in it. What you have will increase if you use them for the good of others. Anyone who does this recognises that we were all baptised in Christ Jesus. As Paul tells us in the second reading. There is no doubt that it pains to give. When you detach yourself and give, it is liken to being dead to sin. Try to put smiles, at least on a face today. Don't postpone it. It may be too late tomorrow. You have your rewards. Peace be with you!
